Beyond Uncertainty of Things—

The Pandemic has introduced uncertainty in our lives and  caused anxiety and concerns to the extent that we have lost control over our own lives and an omnipresent gloom and depression has made it difficult for most of us to cope with the situation and an unending series of critical circumstances. The uncertainty overemployment, finances and most of all relationships has adversely affected our physical, mental and emotional well-being. As human beings, all those things that we crave for-security, self esteem, confidence, belongingness have suddenly been taken away from us and it seems like fighting a lone battle in the waters of life. The fear of this uncertainly has left us anxious, stressed and powerless over the regular aspects of life. The feeling of helplessness has proven to be emotionally draining for many across the globe as the level of tolerance for each individual is different and cannot be predicted. Nevertheless, as a member of the human race, where we share certain universal human emotions and feelings, we have to chart out a way out of this randomness of things and this ‘not-over-so –soon’ situation of the pandemic. We have to derive strength from the simple fact that none of us are alone in this boat and collectively we can devise mechanisms to face the uncertainty with more confidence.

It is quite evident that most of us are have become fearful an worried about the situation to an extent that ‘being worried’ has become a tool for determining our future course of action. Being worried gives us a semblance of control over the situation and falsely prepared for the worst that might come hereafter. Hence, the sooner we realise the fragility of the situation, the better we are prepared to shun agonizing  over the problem and start rethinking the issue in the new light and devise solutions that can be adopted best to overcome the situation without robbing small joys of living in the present by reorienting our mindsets.

Actively dealing with our emotions is yet another way to devise a way out of this situation. Negative emotions can be energy sapping and dangerous. Being overwhelmed with fear and keeping the negative emotions bottled up within you can be toxic and degenerating. It can prove to be vulnerable leading to depression or burnout. Thus, a forceful attempt at putting up a brave face or putting your anxieties and fears under the carpet is definitely not helping salvage the situation .  Dealing with it can. Whether it is loss of job or loss of near and dear ones due to the pandemic, the pain is definitely not easy to shrug off. The intensity of pain is bound to visit you many more times that one can anticipate. Hence, acknowledging the pain or the issue is one of the ways to deal with emotion. Denying it will only add to the pressure.  Allowing yourself to experience this emotion will ensure your journey through it and as wisely said ‘time is the best healer’ can help to come to terms with it in a better manner and finding peace within ourselves.

Seeking reassurance from sources that can help us to cope with the uncertainty can also be helpful. Friends, peers, family are great sources of strength for most of us. Sessions in motivation, stress and devoting some time to pursue the traditional Indian form of Yoga or Meditation go a long way in bringing this balance in our lives. At JIMS, it is our constant endeavour to organise seminars and workshops which deliberate upon the mechanisms that can help face Covid challenges and to reboot our lives.

Looking from a perspective, the pandemic has actually given us an opportunity to rethink about the pace of life we were used to living and which we had actually accorded the real meaning of life. But somewhere along this , relationships had taken a back seat and we were happy leading our lives in comfortable cocoons.  The availability of  time on our hands  and a slower pace of life amidst pandemic has made us appreciate the tenderness of relationship and the need for such bonding.

Thus, pandemic has delivered an important lesson to human beings that life can change any moment and it brings its own baggage of surprises with it. But also learning from this experience that not every change is bad. A change in perspective to the life can support our transition through this uncertainty. Opportunity arises out of uncertainties and facing this uncertainty can also help us to learn, adapt , overcome challenges and build resilience to grow as a person.
