Relationship Between IT and Management

By Dr. Ruchi Singhal

According to Paul Reber, a professor of psychology at North-western University, brain is one of the most important and vital organs of our human body. From our memories to important dates and other significant data, our brain has the capacity to store it all, and probably even a lot more. This seemingly small organ can store somewhere around 2.5 million gigabytes of digital memory which is roughly the space a television would take if it was left to run for more than 300 years. And hence, because of the amazing storage and retention capacity of our brain, it is no wonder that studies, in earlier times, were imparted orally. In ancient India, gurukulas, a type of education system, were prevalent all throughout the country. The aim of this type of institution was to make sure that the students retained the knowledge that was passed on to them, all throughout their life.

But as times changed and the world evolved, a lot of inventions took place around the globe. In 1645, the first mechanical calculator was created and by 1940s, the first electronic computers started to emerge. And these computers were capable of every function that earlier only a human brain could perform. From making calculations to storing data, everything became possible with a small electronic device. And over time, the computer has been designed to execute functions that no one ever thought of before. Hence, this is the reason why the IT or the ‘information technology’ industry has grown significantly in the last few years. Be it offices, health or gaming sectors, computers and technology is heavily used everywhere. The usage of computers has made life and work so easy and simple for everyone that even schools and colleges are also not left untouched by the benefits of the IT sector.

Thus, like every other educational institute, JIMS Kalkaji is also no different. This Indraprastha University affiliated college, has incorporated the use of computers and technology very well in their management. From the daily work carried out in the college to providing students subjects related to information and technology, the college has done a commendable job. Following gives the list of how the staff at JIMS Kalkaji uses technology in their day-to-day functioning:

Keeping a Record of Students

At the time of admission, it gets difficult for colleges to keep a check on the number of students that took admission, got transferred to another branch or left the college. To make the work hassle free, JIMS has made use of tools and software that help the management in keeping a tab on students.

Communication

Be it any official notice or invite to fresher’s party, all the information is communicated by the management through mails. So, even if a student is absent or misses out on the important announcements in college, he will always find the related particulars in the inbox of his mail.

Enterprise Resource Planning

Enterprise Resource Planning or more commonly known as ERP is a software that is used to manage the core activities of any organisation. Staff at JIMS Kalkaji uses this software for a number of activities. From taking online attendance to uploading notes and assignments for students to telling the marks of assessments, ERP helps the faculty in many ways. The software is equally beneficial in keeping a record of the syllabus covered by the teachers or tracking the number of students that attended a particular class. Thus, a resource planning software has eased the work of teachers and staff, manifolds.

Effects of COVID-19

As the current pandemic has struck the whole world down, management at JIMS Kalkaji has made sure that the academics and studies of students are not disrupted. For this purpose, they are conducting online classes on Zoom or Google Meet. The related notes and assignments are also uploaded in the Google Classroom. Not only this, if the college wishes to conduct any tests, it’ll have to do so through online means now. And as the teachers of JIMS have been coming to college for the last 3 months, even in this situation, they didn’t have to worry about conducting online classes on campus, since the college premises is equipped with stable wi-fi and computer labs.

Apart from integrating the use of computers and technology in their management, JIMS Kalkaji has also made sure that they make their students aware about the different aspects of IT. At JIMS, the students are exposed to a lot of practical activities related to computing. They are taught the basics of Word, Excel, Power Point, SPSS etc. The college has also organised two very trending courses, Digital Marketing and Advanced Excel, in the premises of the college itself so that more students are able to avail the opportunity to learn about two of the most sought-after courses. Thus, not only does JIMS offers a wide scope of knowledge in the field of Information and Technology, but has also set an example that inculcating IT evidently benefits the management of the college and management education at large.
