Innovation in Indian Educational System: A Paradigm Shift

Innovation in educational system is regarded as one of the most complex issues today. The issue becomes multidimensional as it involves a huge shift from the traditional pattern of education handed down to us by the colonial rulers to establishing a system which breathes fundamental liberty and flexibility. The administrative structures and financial procedures inherited from the colonizers simply adhere to the status quo and lack flexibility, dynamism and ability to take India to be a part of the rapidly evolving global system where, today, innovation and ‘ out – of box ‘ thinking has become a norm. It is important that the nation is in a position, today, to harness its resources towards meeting rising goals of growth and development.

A glance at some of the developed nations of the world’s educational system and their growthtrajectory, it can be confidently asserted that the two entities share a close co-relation with each other. In order to encourage innovation amongst the students, it is imperative that we try to overcome some of the serious limitations that we face in this context. In this regard, we need to revamp not only the education curriculum and teaching pedagogy but also try to reign in the atmosphere of factors that breed suspicion and fear about innovation. The entire diaspora of socio- economic, political and psychological emotions and reactions have to support and create faith and dispel ignorance surrounding innovation. Moreover, in India, another real litmus test of any initiative lies in the deepening of the reform to reach at the lowest level in rural India.

Therefore, some of the immediate drivers that need to be introduced to impact innovation in the educational system is to optimize resources like human resource, money, time, skills to steam the engine of innovation. Secondly, A complete overhaul of the existing educational structure will infuse the much-needed breath of fresh air. The structure, functions and procedures have to be attuned to provide flexibility of operation, a wider spectrum of choices and the dynamism of an inter- disciplinary approach to education compared to the ‘silos’ of the existing one. The reconstruction of the system has to strive to provide an environment of teaching and learning which provide solutions to the current problems confronting the nation. However, the transformation of the system would be meaningless if we are not able to touch lives of millions of those children who have been denied access to education because of innumerable factors. The efforts of the government, in the past, have not been able to establish an effective educational platform for citizens totally, so a universal education system which sets to seek a holistic learning along with improvement in standards and methodology of teaching and learning can go a long way in raising the bar for innovative ideas to perforate the bloodline. Development of new curriculum designs and techniques which are based on activity- based learning and ‘experiential learning’ will not only stimulate young minds but also would be instrumental in containing the high rate of school drop-outs in the country. More and more emphasis needs to be placed on a collaborative teaching and learning experience. Initiatives undertaken by government as well as institutions in creation of skill –based teaching and establishment of  incubation centers to encourage young minds are not only effective instruments of education but are also reflectors of changing mind set and greater acceptance towards self learning and a shift from traditional domains of education and skill acquisition. Finally, Innovation would remain a far-fetched dream and an elitist subject unless and until the teachers and the protagonists disseminating  information are duly trained and geared to take upon themselves this monumental responsibility. Teachers need to be prepared with new teaching techniques, aids and instruments to encourage young minds to think beyond. Teachers role can never end with workshops and classes but they are the biggest support mechanisms in terms of motivation and driving away fears and insecurities associated with thinking differently.  Teachers also need to be a part of the decision making  process in introducing changes as they are  in sync with the vision of the system and can prove to be the strongest and the most important link  that can not only initiate change but also sustain it in the long term.
