India’s G20 Presidency : Global Solutions for Youth and Sustainable Development

India aims to resolve the global issues through ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ using three C’s that is coordination, collaboration and cooperation. India has got an opportunity to lead the G20 Summit in New Delhi (Pragati Maidan) on 9-10 Sept 2023. Other Participating countries in G20 summit are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany,Indonesia, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa. Turkey, United Kingdom and United States. It is important to mention that the twentieth member is European Union.

The G20 presidency gives India an unprecedented opportunity to test its leadership and credibility before the world family. During this summit, India can demonstrate to be a “global power of importance,” according to the Chief Economic Adviser, Mr. V. Anantha Nageswaran. ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ refers to the idea that the world is a family and that this is made possible via collaboration, coordination, and cooperation. The main goal of the G20 has always been to emphasize the value of inclusive cooperation and collective action among the world’s leading industrialized economies and emerging economies.

At a time, when the concerns of the “Global South” are in need of more attention from the international community, India is also at the core of a troika of emerging economies holding the G20 presidencies of Indonesia, India, and Brazil, respectively. This might serve as yet another pillar for India, bridging the divide on topics like climate change, trade facilitation, and assistance for resilient health care between the West and the Global South.India is going to represent G20 (Group of twenty countries) which comprises of 85 percent of global GDP, 65 percent of global population, and around 75 percent of global trade (Source: IBEF). PM Modi has asserted that present era is not of war and conflicts should be resolved mutually through discussion and diplomacy roundtable.  The current war between Russia and Ukraine is one of the geopolitical topics that the summit may discuss. In light of India’s key position in trade, a few more geopolitical considerations may be discussed.

Discussions during the G20 summit includes India’s efforts to advance sustainable development, which includes not just addressing climate change but also ecosystem services which aim at reducing marine plastic waste and marine litter as well as advancing sustainable development goals.Focus is to restore the areas affected by mining and forest fire as well as restoring of habitat that is species-based conservation. Accordingly, the best practices can be put in force and can act as a torch bearer from global perspective.Moreover, during this G20 summit -deliberations may include energy insecurity issues, climate finance and handling global debt issues.

Socioeconomic transformation is looking forward to better solutions from digital architecture and digital access through G20 presidency.  Digital Public Infrastructure has supported an inclusive people-centric growth paradigm.India’s G20 presidency has prioritized areas such as Gig economy, bridging the global skill gaps and sustainable financing of social security. India’s G20 presidency is going to act as catalytic approach for skilling youth for jobs, create more MSME’s, setting of Startups and strategic management of tourist destinations. Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Youth Affairs has been active in launching white paper for showcasing the skills of youth on international platform (Organised on 8th Feb 2023). During this Y20 summit, the summit outcomes asked youth people to be more innovative and adept at using cutting-edge technologies. Taking these aspects into consideration, Y20 India has included the theme “Future of Work: Industry 4.0, Innovation and 21st Century Skills” along with pertinent sub-themes with an aim to broaden the scope of discussion on important aspects.The G20, therefore, place a greater emphasis on youth participation in innovative ideas, smart technology use, and startup establishment. The transition from women’s development to women led development has been given top priority by India’s Presidency.Women are central to growth & progress not just as beneficiaries but as those who drive this very process.India’s position on health concerns expects clear responsibility and total openness, andresponds far more effectively to the difficulties of the next health emergency.

India has identified six shared priorities in areas such as public digital goods and digital infrastructure, climate action, climate finance and technology collaborations, the clean, sustainable and inclusive energy transition, accelerated progress on sustainable development goals, women-led development, and multilateral reforms. This is done in an effort to highlight these issues.India’s G20 presidency is intended to show central role in strengthening global architecture and governance on all foremost international economic issues.
