SHWETA KHANDELWAL

Think about the last time an online platform seemed to know exactly what you wanted. You searched for a pair of shoes, and similar products started appearing in your feed. You watched a particular type of content, and suddenly your recommendations began changing. You ordered food from an app, and a few days later, your favourite meal appeared among the suggestions.

For the customer, it can feel convenient. For the marketer, it represents something much bigger: the growing power of hyper-personalization.

Marketing has always been about understanding customers. What has changed is the depth and speed at which this understanding can now happen. With Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, customer analytics and real-time behavioural data, brands can increasingly move from communicating with a broad audience to creating experiences that feel individually relevant.

Beyond “Dear Customer”

There was a time when personalization simply meant adding a customer’s name to an email.

That was a useful first step, but today’s consumers expect considerably more. They want brands to understand their preferences, previous interactions, interests and changing needs.

This is where hyper-personalization differs from traditional personalization. Instead of relying only on basic customer information or broad demographic groups, it can combine multiple behavioural signals and use them to determine what to communicate, when to communicate and through which channel.

For example, an online fashion platform may notice that a customer repeatedly explores formal clothing but rarely looks at casual wear. Rather than displaying the same promotional campaign to everyone, the platform can adjust its recommendations to reflect that behaviour.

The customer sees relevance. The marketer sees an opportunity to create a stronger connection.

Attention Has Become the New Currency

Consumers today are surrounded by information.

Social media feeds refresh continuously. Notifications compete for attention. Advertisements appear on websites, apps, videos and even connected devices. With so much content available, customers have become selective about what deserves their time.

This creates a difficult question for marketers: How do you make someone stop scrolling?

The answer is not always a bigger advertisement or a louder message. Increasingly, it is relevance.

A message that speaks directly to a customer’s current need has a better chance of being noticed than a generic advertisement designed for everyone. This is why the competitive advantage in marketing is gradually shifting from simply reaching more people to understanding individual customers better.

AI Is Changing the Game

AI is giving marketers the ability to identify patterns in customer behaviour at a scale that would be extremely difficult to achieve manually.

It can analyse browsing activity, previous purchases, content engagement and responses to earlier campaigns. These insights can then help businesses recommend products, adjust communication and anticipate possible customer interests.

The development is already moving beyond simple recommendation engines. In 2026, retailers are increasingly paying attention to AI-powered shopping journeys, while also trying to retain direct relationships with customers and the valuable data generated through those relationships.

This creates an interesting shift. AI is not merely helping marketers produce advertisements faster. It is increasingly influencing how brands decide what individual customers should see next.

But there is a catch.

When Personalization Becomes Too Personal

Imagine receiving a recommendation for something you recently searched for. It feels useful.

Now imagine receiving a message that reveals how much a company knows about your online behaviour. Suddenly, the same technology may feel uncomfortable.

This is the fine line marketers must learn to manage.

Hyper-personalization works best when customers perceive it as helpful rather than intrusive. Research and recent industry discussions continue to highlight the tension between personalization, privacy and consumer trust.

The lesson is simple: just because a brand can use certain data does not necessarily mean it should.

Transparency matters. Customers need to understand how their information is being used and, wherever appropriate, have meaningful choices about that use.

The Human Element Still Matters

There is another paradox in the age of AI.

As marketing becomes more technologically sophisticated, human connection becomes even more important.

Customers do not want every interaction to feel automated. They want communication that is useful, natural and meaningful. AI can identify patterns and generate recommendations, but it cannot replace the empathy, judgment and creativity required to build a genuine relationship.

This is why the future is unlikely to be about AI versus humans. It is more likely to be about AI working with humans.

The best marketers will use technology to understand customers while using human judgment to decide how that understanding should be translated into communication.

From Personalization to Prediction

The next stage of hyper-personalization may be even more interesting.

Marketing is gradually moving from responding to what customers have already done toward predicting what they might need next.

Consider travel marketing. A brand could potentially combine previous travel behaviour, preferred destinations, budget preferences and timing to create a more relevant recommendation. Similarly, a fitness platform might adapt its content according to a customer’s engagement pattern rather than sending the same message to every subscriber.

The objective is not to know everything about the customer. It is to anticipate what could genuinely add value.

The Real Competition Is Understanding, Not Data

It is tempting to believe that the company with the most customer data will automatically become the best marketer.

That is unlikely.

Data without interpretation is simply information. AI without human judgment can produce irrelevant or even uncomfortable experiences. And personalization without trust can damage the very customer relationship it was intended to strengthen.

The real competitive advantage lies in combining data, technology, creativity, empathy and responsible decision-making.

Customers do not necessarily want brands to know everything about them. They want brands to understand what is relevant to them.

That distinction may define the next phase of marketing.

In a world where everyone is competing for attention, perhaps the brands that win will not be those that speak the loudest. They will be the ones that listen most carefully, understand most intelligently and respond most meaningfully.

And that is the real promise of hyper-personalization: not making customers feel watched, but making them feel understood.

BY DR.
